The LL.B Courses, as provided by the School, had been accorded permanent affiliation of recognition by the Bar Council of India (BCI) in 1992. (Vide letter No. 1992[LE/Mtg] dtd. 9th July 1992 of Bar Council of India).

School of Indian Legal Thought

The School of Indian Legal Thought was established by the Mahatma Gandhi University as one of its regular teaching departments in 1989. The School visualised a comprehensive and integrated programme of legal education, providing for Three Year and Five Year LL.B Courses, LL.M. and Ph.D Programmes. The LL.B Courses, as provided for by the School, had been accorded permanent affiliation of recognition by the Bar Council of India in 1992. (Vide letter No. 1992[LE/Mtg dtd. 9th July, 1992 of Bar Council of India).

The School became functional in the academic year 1991-92 with a Three Year LL.B. Degree Course. In the Academic Year 1994-95 as part of its programme of academic expansion, the School began the Five Year LL.B (Hons.) Degree Course and decided to continue the Three Year LL. B Degree Programme only as an Evening Course. The School started, in the same academic year, the LL.M and Ph.D/ Programmes as well. Thus, the School became a full-fledged regular Post-graduate and Research Department of the University which provides for imparting legal education at the first degree level also.

One of the major objectives of the School is to undertake systematic research and study of law with a dynamic curriculum that is constantly evolving and by engaging in innovative interdisciplinary research.

The School promotes clinical and experiential learning where theory is put into practice. An excellent community of academicians, professionals, industry experts, and research scholars supports the School and its students.  True to the vision of  Justice V.R Krishna Iyer, Prof.(Dr.)U.R Ananthamoorthi, Prof.(Dr.)V.D.Sebastian and Prof (Dr.)Vikraman Nair  School of Indian Legal Thought has remained a leader in the field of legal education for over 30 years.

School of Indian Legal Thought is the premier university department in the state to launch BBA.LL.B (Hons.) program. Also besides imparting legal education at the first degree level the school offers postgraduate and research programmes.

Location

The School campus is located at Suryakalady Hills, Nattasserry S.H Mount P.O which is 5 km away from Kottayam., State of Kerala. In order to reach the School take a deviation from Chavittuvari Junction on M.C Road and travel 1.5 Km. The nearest airport is at Kochi (Nedumbassery) which is about 80 km away.
